WHAT'S NEW IN MATH AND READING?
Keeping up with our SECOND GRADERS!
On this page you will be able to catch up on what your children have been working on in in math and reading. See below to find out what they have been learning. Then go to our new page specifically for writing.
MATH: We recently ended our money unit. We have seen good growth in our students in regards to identifying coins and finding the value of coin combinations. We are beginning our unit on mental math. You will notice that this unit introduces a variety of strategies that students can use to add and subtract mentally. We will be encouraging all students to try these strategies and use the ones that help them the most. This chapter is an introduction to these strategies, and not all of our second graders will master them this year.
At home: You can practice adding and subtracting tens from two and three digit numbers. For example: 37+20=
Reading: Our new unit is called 'Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power'. We started by focusing on fluency. We are learning that fluent readers scoop up words into phrases, notice dialogue tags, use meaning, and read at a just right pace. Next we will focus on understanding literary language and meeting the challenges of reading longer books. We will end our unit by working in book clubs with others who have similar goals.
At Home: Find some time to listen to your children's fluent reading.
